sxsw
SXSW was awesome. In no way did we get to see as many shows as we would have liked to, but this clip from KUT gives a nice snippet of some of the fabulousness that descended upon Austin. You can hear from many of the bands on their website that attempts to re-cap SXSW.
If you don't have time to listen to the entire thing, fast forward it to 24:50 and listen to K'Naan do his song, 'Wavin' Flag' ...you will not regret it.
When I get older..I will be stronger.
skin deep
it's a long story..that maybe i'll blog about..that begins with a mosquito bite, and ends with where I am at now in my consciousness and awareness of the chemicals i am eating, cleaning my apartment with, breathing in, washing clothes and dishes in, washing my body in, and putting on my skin.
organic food is regulated by the national organic program (nop) who gets to decide what is organic and what the certification process is. depending on how a product is labeled it can be made of 100% organic products, 70% ..and on. 'Natural' means NOTHING. Don't buy something because it is labeled natural.
cosmetics, on the other hand, are not regulated by ANYBODY. There are agencies that certify certain things organic, but there is no regulation for them, and MANY of them have been found to give the certification to agencies and products that do NOT fit the description.
skin deep is a website you can use to check the cosmetics you are using. it will give you a rating of how 'hazardous' a product is based on the chemicals it is made up of. products are also rated on whether or not the ingredients have been tested. If there is little research, it tells you in the 'data gap' rating. Personally, i find it more useful to go through each ingredient and see what it's for and what (if any) negative side effects it has been shown to cause. you'd be surprised.
no cable
ed and i have gotten rid of our cable. ed felt like it was a distraction for him and his writing..and i never really watch it. the shows we do enjoy (heroes, weeds, dexter, californication, flight of the conchords, etc) we have been downloading anyway or watching on hulu.
instead we've been reading, playing computer and video games together, getting outside more, and researching more things on the internet. it's amazing how quiet it is without it..and how you notice how little you need it when it's gone. it was just something to have on in the background, something to turn on when there wasn't "anything else to do" ..there are SO MANY other things to do.
hubs
absolute. most. favorite. person. ever. this entire grad school process has shown me how amazingly supportive, selfless, humble, dedicated and determined he is. i hope i make him smile as many times a day as he does me.

hola honey dumplings!
so i think i'm at the end of interviews. the deadline for everyone to decide is april 15th..and i'm thinking it's a little late to be asking me to fly anywhere for an interview. i'm bracing myself for a swift line of rejection emails.
still no word on UC irvine, UT Psy, and Stony Brook. U of H ended up being really weird...apparently the people I applied to work under are not accepting people for next year (they both already have six!), but one of the other faculty members saw my application and was impressed. she called to see how i'd feel about working in her lab if i didn't have anything work out anywhere else.....but she does not study interpersonal relationships. she's more into health psychology, and spent over an hour with me on the phone trying to convince me of the many ways i would be able to tweak her research to fit my interests. no talk of admission or rejection though...
i don't know. i think school is going to be stressful enough without having to fight to find my own research. plus there's UT and Rochester, and i know i wouldn't have trouble there.
so i am sorry ivy darling..but it does not look like we will end up in houston :(
the UT recruitment weekend was this past weekend, and it was fabulous. i really enjoyed speaking with all of the different professors and grad students, and love that there are 4 or 5 people to work with instead of just 1. ed has still not heard back from Syracuse, however, so i am trying not to get too attached.
taylor (ed's younger brother) is on spring break this week and will be living on our couch. i know i was ready to be rid of the younger siblings last summer when they finally left, but he's aight in small doses :)
we saw campbell a couple of weeks ago, and she is a giant! and her head is in the 100th percentile :) she has just learned the word no (parents are convinced that her daycare friends taught her that one) and is becoming very sneaky. Example:
Chris and Brandy had Taylor come over one evening recently to babysit...and apparently cookies are her new favorite thing and she's not allowed to have very many. Taylor said the second her parents walked out the door, she looked at the door..looked at him..back at the door..and he said he could tell she was thinking about something. she looks back at him and goes, "cookie?" like just because mom and pops were gone, she would get one. taylor told her no, and she pouted for most of the evening.
we saw her and she was very un-pouty, and cute as can be. no pictures though :(
we are going home this evening to get a free oil change and floor mats for the car..and to see the family. we haven't been home since january, so i'd say it's time.
hope you're all doing well! when are people coming to austin?!?!?
