So I was accepted at Rochester :) We still have to wait and hear back from Ed's schools, so no word yet on if that is where we will end up. He heard back and was denied at Texas State and UMass..and is devastated..2 rejections in the mail on the same day does not bake for a happy boy.
I was also denied at the University of Minnesota. I had emailed the woman there that I wanted to work under during the application process and she had said that she would probably be accepting a new student, but was not sure. Dr. Reis at Rochester informed me though that she is getting up there in age and would probably not be there when I finished, and therefore would probably not be taking anyone. So I don't feel alllllllllll that bad about it. Ed was informed that they mailed their decision letters this week, so he should be expecting his Minnesota decision sometime soon as well.
No other exciting news..I managed to catch some sort of cold/flu from the woman I work with and feel like death. I am probably going to have to take a nap after typing this..it's exhausting :)

Rochester
is COLD. But I couldn't stop smiling when we landed in Rochester to snow falling..my first time to see it!

We stayed in a hotel on the opposite side of the Genesee river from the University. The campus is in a U shape bordered on one side by the river. The campus is TINY in comparison to UT, maybe the size of the 6 pack. Seriously.

The first night we had a happy hour with the grad students and then dinner at an Indian restaurant. I have never had Indian food in a restaurant before (deeksha's mom makes it for me though :)) so it was quite the experience. When we were leaving the restaurant that night, we turned the corner to go to the car and BAM were hit by the coldest air I've ever felt. I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me and been replaced my air that had frozen my insides. Sigh.
Next morning was interview time. The interview went really well..I met with each professor in the Social department for a 30 min interview. I wasn't asked any questions I couldn't answer and didn't fumble all over myself (or puke) so I'd say it was a success. Only downfall of my application is that I only took one semester of stats/research and design. I make up for it though with enthusiasm :)
Took a walking tour of the campus after lunch and a driving tour of the city afterward. Spent some time in a coffee shop that was an old Chevy dealership, and then headed back to the hotel for a freaking NAP. Waking up at 4am on Friday to make it to our 6am flight, and waking up on the hour every hour to make sure I didn't miss my alarm the next night made April a very sleepy girl.
That night there was a dinner with all applicants, faculty and grad students from all psy departments. Thai food was served. Honestly..I don't know why they served Indian and Thai food to people who were obviously going to have nervous stomachs. Jerks.
The dinner was fun though, Ed got to meet the faculty and hang out with the grad students from the night before. Dr. Reis came and spoke with me about all the reasons I should go to Rochester..he didn't try to convince the other people that applied under him that they should go there, so I took this as a good sign.
The trip as a whole was a success I'd say, and if we didn't end up going there it would surely not be because it was cold. Ed and I both got a very elitist sort of vibe..almost everyone went to a small, private liberal arts college and thought very little of Texas except that I must 0wn several horses. I asked if they had any good Mexican food places around (ed was craving breakfast tacos) and they just stared at me. "You mean, like, that Mexicans make? There's a Mike's tacos, it's a step up from Taco Bell. But there's good Polish food."
They were convinced that the other side of the river was the "bad" side of town..but we walked it and could not find anything to make them think this except that it was more diverse than their side of the river. It was really sad.
So we'll see. Ed will hopefully start to hear things back in March and we can actually begin to make some decisions.
For now:
Rejected by UC Santa Barbara
Interviewed at Rochester
Accepted by UT HDFS
Expecting a phone call from UofH..not sure if it's a phone interview or to ask me to come interview, but exciting! That's 4/9 schools.
Enjoy my pictures of snow!

ADMISSION
Not an interview..ADMISSION. To UT Austin's Human Development and Family Sciences program :)
I'm feeling pretty spiffy. Ed bought me celebratory tacos, and my brother took me out to Mozart's for chocolate cake. Mmmm.
I still have my interview with Rochester next weekend, and I still plan to rock it, but it's great to know that we have more than one option at this point. Ed should start to hear back from schools in the next month or so, so we'll see where we stand when all the cards are shown!

Rejection..
is a bitch.
::clears throat::
April Renee Allen,
I regret to convey to you that your application for admission to the University of California, Santa Barbara Department of Psychology for Fall 2009 has been denied.
Sigh.
This was my personal number 1 pick..and also the only school I applied to where there were no schools for Ed, so maybe it's for the best that we were not put in a position to have to choose to go to a location where there was absolutely no chance of him going to school until I was done. I would have absolutely loved to work with two professors here, one of which is the former grad student of the man I'm interviewing with at Rochester.
I still have Rochester to look forward to, and Rich emailed me that he had a long conversation with Dr. Reis on Wednesday that ended with, "now, if I can only get her to stop calling me sir!" Rich thought it was hilarious..but I can just see myself walking up and calling him Harry..and then hearing nothing but crickets chirping as everyone stares at me.
So that's 2/9 decisions back for me, none yet for Ed. Will keep you posted!
And Ivy- your beautiful face is now on my fridge!!

Ten Truths
1. I hate forwards. Email, texting, blogging..but I do it because I love Ivy :)
2. When Ed and I were dating in high school he played a ridiculous game, Everquest. We almost broke up over it a dozen plus times because he'd get lost in it, not realize the time, and never pick me up for dinner. Sigh. Now, I have a character..her name is Tadia :) We're nerdly. I know it. Neither of us are really big TV fans, and it fills the void that school work, wedding planning, and applications have left in my world.
3. I feel like a giant fraud, and am afraid of being found out when (if) I get in to grad school and have to do some genuine work. Mmm..it's not the work that scares me, because I know I can work my ass off, it's the on-the-spot questions that make me feel nauseous.
4. I've never been close to any of my extended relatives. I've asked my parents why we weren't closer to aunts/uncles/cousins/grandparents, and their reply is just that they didn't care to be. I resent them for that. And am envious of people who have large families that they can't wait to see. Ed's grandparents live right down the street from my parents, and they're always having everybody over. I'm closer to ALL of his relatives than I've EVER been to any of mine, and I'm so, so grateful for that.
5. Ed is my world. We grew in to who we are, together. He challenges me. He will do anything to make me feel beautiful. When I started college all I wanted was my bachelors..mostly because all I was ever made to feel like I deserved was my "M.R.S." degree. When I told my parents I wanted to go to grad school, they laughed. Ed jumped in the air with excitement. Same response when I told them each about my interview. Ed never even mentioned that he hadn't heard from a school yet, just yelled, "We're going to New York!" He is my support system. He kisses me on the cheek and makes sure I'm nice and snuggly before he leaves for work every morning. He'd dance with me anywhere, and even though he HATES to snuggle, he'd do it for hours just to make me smile. On our last day in Rome, he went and bought tons of cheeses and wine while I was taking a shower because he knew that was the one thing we didn't do there that I really wanted to. He tickles me all the time, just because he loves the sound of my oh-my-gosh-I-can't-breathe laugh.
6. I don't fall asleep in public places. I just can't do it. Can't fall asleep if the TV or a movie is on, even if I've seen it a hundred times. The ONLY time I have ever been relaxed enough to fall asleep was on the beach in Kailua, Hawaii. When I get stressed out, I imagine myself laying on the beach, warm sand, cool breeze, waves crashing. I love Hawaii because Ed proposed there, but even more so because it was the place where I felt the most relaxed in my life.
7. I really wish I had my long, curly hair again and am terrified that it might never be that pretty again.
8. I would absolutely love to go out of state for grad school...and even though my family and friends are in Texas, will be slightly disappointed if we end up staying.
9. I hate my job. Loathe. Had a dream this morning that I quit, and cried a little when my alarm went off and I realized it wasn't real. Stupid thing is, if we stayed in Austin I'd feel like I had to keep the job too. I can't say no to people and it drives me fucking nuts.
10. I'm really trying to stop cursing..but can't find a good reason to.
